A sonic spaceship emerging from the tree-scape of Northern Virginia, Wolf Trap is the only National Park dedicated to the presentation of the performing arts. Amidst the Ken Burns documentary about the National Parks I can’t say I remember him mentioning this park, maybe he did. I grew up seeing shows at this venue with my folks, everyone from Aretha Franklin to Crosby Stills Nash and Young.


Recently I came across this photograph of folks entering the main gate at Wolf Trap performing the pre show ritual of claiming lawn seats. This picture, first published in an issue of National Geographic in the late seventies, captured the early years of the venue. It also captured my mother and father, highlighted below.
